What is Single-Use Plastic?

Since the dawn of plastic mass production in the 1950’s, the world has created a staggering 9 billion tons of plastic. That production has increased exponentially each year since and it is estimated that we are producing 21 times more plastic today than in 1960. Plastic has many valuable uses, but because it is cheap and easy to produce, it has been abused and become pervasive in our lives. Packaging is the single biggest market for single-use plastic. Much of this (an estimated 9 million tons annually) makes its way to our oceans and waterways.

Alternatives to Single-Use Plastic

Only about 9% of all plastic makes its way to recycling facilities. Once there, the plastic can only be recycled a limited number of times, degrading each time it is recycled. While recycling is a good thing, it only delays the inevitable dumping of plastic into our environment. Aluminum, on the other hand, is a permanent material, it can be recycled and remade over and over again without degrading. Unlike plastic, an estimated 75% of all aluminum ever produced is still in use today. Aluminum is strong and also lightweight, reducing transport emissions and making it cheaper to recycle.

In an effort to further reduce single-use plastics in our lives and our environment, we have formulated all of our products to pour straight from the bottle, no plastic pump required. If you need a pump, no judgment, we just hope you will hang onto it and use it again the next time you restock your Kailua products
